Kevin Neal, Acting U.S. Marshal

District of Maine

Portland, ME – The U.S. Marshals Service’s Maine Violent Offender Task Force (MVOTF) announces the arrest of Matthew Gallagher 34, of Lewiston, ME, on August 28, 2024.

Gallagher was wanted by Maine authorities for warrants issued by Androscoggin County for Theft of a Firearm, Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person, and Criminal Threatening with a Firearm. The Maine Department of Corrections also had a warrant for Gallagher for Violation of Probation.

Through a collaborative law enforcement effort, authorities developed information which led investigators to an apartment on Main Street in Auburn, ME. MVOTF members along with Lewiston Police Department and Auburn Police Department conducted a search of the apartment. During the search, Gallagher fled the apartment to the roof of the building, in an attempt to avoid capture. Gallagher then jumped to the roof of a building next-door. Authorities observed Gallagher on the roof, and he was ordered to come down. After being surrounded, Gallagher surrendered to law enforcement and descended from the rooftop without incident.

Gallagher was arrested on the outstanding warrants and booked into the local county jail.

The USMS, Maine Violent Offender Task Force is comprised of members of the U.S. Marshals Service, Maine Department of Corrections, Biddeford Police Department, U.S. Customs Border Protection, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and Maine National Guard Counterdrug Task Force.
