Task Force Investigation Leads to Foreign Fugitive Arrest

Albuquerque, NM – The U.S. Marshals District of New Mexico Southwest Fugitive Team (USMS-SWIFT) developed information on September 4, 2023, resulting in the arrest of a man in Albuquerque for Illegal Entry. Ivan Gustavo Hernandez-Cabra is wanted out of Mexico for his involvement in the ambush and massacre of 9 Americans in Sonora, Mexico

Hernandez-Cabral, 24, was arrested in Albuquerque, NM for Illegal Entry and is pending extradition to Mexico, where he is wanted by the Fiscalía Especializada en Materia de Delincuencia Organizada (FEMDO) - the Mexican Attorney General’s Anti-Terrorism, Firearms Trafficking, and Organized Crime Investigations Unit, on charges of Organized Crime and his in involvement in the ambush that took place in Sonora, Mexico on November 4, 2019, resulting in the deaths of 9 American Mormons – 3 women, and 6 children.

The United States Marshals Service Las Cruces Office developed information of Hernandez-Cabral’s location and contacted Homeland Security Investigation (HSI), which apprehended Hernandez-Cabral on Illegal Entry.

“This arrest represents our relentless and unwavering dedication, along with our partners, in tracking down and apprehending violent foreign fugitives,” said Sonya K. Chavez, US Marshal for the District of New Mexico. “Don’t come to the State of New Mexico and attempt to hide, we will find you and ensure justice is served” she added.

The U.S. Marshals Service District of New Mexico – Southwest Investigative Fugitive Team for this arrest was composed of officers/agents from the USMS Taskforce and Homeland Security Investigations.
