U.S. Marshals Arrest Man Wanted in 3 Counties on Multiple Felony Warrants

Indianapolis, IN – The U.S. Marshals Southern District of Indiana and the Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force – Indianapolis Division, early today arrested a man wanted for multiple felony warrants out of Boone County, Montgomery County and Monroe County.

David Alan Swails, 21, was taken into custody at approximately 6 a.m. after he was found hiding in the basement of a residence in the 400 block of Oakland Street.

Swails had been wanted on charges of resisting law enforcement, armed robbery, burglary, theft, battery resulting in bodily injury and probation violation, all stemming from a 2017 incident where he was charged with attempted murder of a law enforcement officer. Swails eventually pleaded to unlawful use of body armor, criminal recklessness and resisting law enforcement in the 2017 case.

On May 14, the Jamestown marshal, where the current cases originated, reached out to the USMS to request the assistance of the Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force to locate Swails. The task force accepted the case and initiated a case review of the details, compiling criminal history and reports, current information, and copies of the warrants from Boone and Montgomery Counties.

During the Marshals' investigation, information was developed that Swails had been hiding in an abandoned building in the rural Plainfield area. After an exhaustive search, officers located a building containing items belonging to Swails, but Swails was not present. Further investigation led the team to the Oakland Street location in the 400 block of Oakland Street, where Swails was found hiding in the basement.

"No matter where a fugitive may try to flee or hide, we will pursue them, find them and bring them to justice," said U.S. Marshal for the Southern District of Indiana Dan McClain.

The U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force (Indianapolis Division) is a multijurisdictional fugitive task force comprising the U.S. Marshals Service, Immigration Customs and Enforcement, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, Indiana State Police, Marion County Sheriff's Department, Greenwood Police Department, and the Fishers Police Department.
