U.S. Marshals Capture Florida Homicide Suspect in Missouri

Kansas City, MO – United States Marshal Mark S. James announced today the capture of a homicide suspect from Tallahassee, Florida in rural Jackson County.

U.S. Marshals arrested Yuri Harris for a Leon County Florida arrest warrant on August 31, 2020. Harris was charged with an August 27th homicide in which the victim was fatally shot during a home invasion robbery. Harris fled the area soon afterwards and various sightings placed him travelling through the mid-west to an unknown destination.

Investigators learned that Harris and a female associate were spotted at a business in the Lee's Summit area earlier that morning. Jackson County Sheriff's Deputies, Independence Police Detectives, Deputy U.S. Marshals and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Agents assigned to the task force canvassed the area and after approximately two hours located the suspect's vehicle at Longview Lake. Investigators conducted surveillance and took Harris into custody when he emerged from a wooded area and approached his vehicle. He was lodged at the Jackson County jail and awaits extradition back to Florida. Marshal James stated, "Mr. Harris definitely chose the wrong place to come to with the additional resources in town for Operation LeGend. We were able to put a lot of manpower towards his capture."

The U.S. Marshals Midwest Violent Fugitive Task Force-Kansas City Division, operates in conjunction with members of the Kansas City, Independence and St. Joseph Missouri Police Departments, Jackson and Buchanan County Sheriff's Offices, Missouri State Highway Patrol and other local and federal law enforcement partners. The task force objectives are to seek out and arrest fugitives charged with violent crimes, drug offenses, sex offenders and other serious felonies. It also provides direct support to law enforcement agencies in tracking down and recovering missing children. Nationally the United States Marshals Service fugitive programs are carried out with local law enforcement in 94 district offices, 67 local fugitive task forces, 8 regional task forces, as well as a growing network of offices in foreign countries.
