Arlington, VA - The United States Marshals Service (USMS) awarded Special Deputy U.S. Marshal (SpDUSM) and West Virginia Air National Guard Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe the USMS Purple Heart for the injuries he sustained while serving on the Operation Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force.

On November 26, 2025, while supporting the Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force, specially deputized National Guardsmen experienced an ambush-style shooting while on patrol. Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, a member of the West Virginia Air National Guard, was conducting a presence patrol at the Farragut North Metro Station in Washington, D.C., while assigned to the Joint Task Force-DC (JTF-DC). Without provocation or warning, an armed assailant began firing at JTF-DC members.  During the ambush, Wolfe and West Virginia Army National Guard Specialist, Sarah Beckstrom were shot and severely wounded.  Tragically, Specialist Beckstrom succumbed to her wounds the next day.  Staff Sgt. Wolfe survived his injuries and continues his miraculous recovery to this day.

Wolfe was presented with the Purple Heart during a ceremony at the USMS Headquarters in Arlington, Virginia.

“Today, we recognize the sacrifice and difficult journey Staff Sgt. Wolfe has faced thus far in his recovery after this vicious and cowardly attack,” said USMS Director Gadyaces S. Serralta. “His strength and perseverance serve as an inspiration to us all and we thank him for his service.”
