U.S. Marshals Task Force Apprehends Two Fugitives in Connection with Massachusetts Mass Shooting

Boston, MA – The U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) District of Massachusetts Fugitive Task Force (DMAFTF) has apprehended two fugitives wanted in connection with a mass shooting that took place in Boston’s Mattapan neighborhood on June 27, 2026. The shooting left one person dead and four others hospitalized.

According to public records, on June 27, 2026, at approximately 1:45 a.m., Boston Police officers responded to the area of 1460 Blue Hill Avenue in Boston following reports of a person being shot. When officers arrived at the scene, they found five people suffering from gunshot wounds. All five victims were transported to local hospitals, where one victim was pronounced deceased from their injuries. The deceased victim was identified as Jose Dantes, 26, of Brockton.

On July 9, 2026, Cerron Wilcox-Buford, of Boston, was charged in Dorchester District Court with Assault to Murder in connection to the shooting. On the same date, Laquan Burris, also of Boston, was charged in Dorchester District Court with Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon in connection to the shooting.

On July 10, 2026, members of the USMS DMAFTF conducted an enforcement operation in Boston’s Jamaica Plan neighborhood, where Buford was taken into custody without incident.

On July 15, 2026, as a result of investigative efforts conducted by members of the USMS DMAFTF, Burris self-surrendered at the Dorchester District Court, where he was taken into custody without incident.

"Our thoughts and prayers remain with the families impacted by this tragic act of violence, and we extend our sincere wishes for a swift and complete recovery to those who were injured,” said Dennis Matulewicz, (A) United States Marshal for the District of Massachusetts. “The safety of our communities remains among our highest priorities. Every violent offender removed from our streets reduces the risk of additional victims and strengthens public confidence in our justice system. We will never stop working tirelessly alongside our law enforcement partners to protect the people we serve."

This USMS fugitive investigation was conducted jointly with the Boston Police Fugitive Unit and Massachusetts State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section as part of the USMS DMAFTF.
