USMS NY-NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force Arrests Shooter of NYPD Officer

For immediate release

New York, NY – Deputies and Task Force Officers from the USMS NY-NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force (NYNJRFTF) apprehended Randy “Popper” Jones, wanted for critically wounding an off-duty New York Police Department (NYPD) police officer during a planned robbery on Saturday.  Tragically, Police Officer Adeed Fayaz, father of two, succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced dead Tuesday.

Officer Fayaz and his brother-in-law were out trying to buy an SUV they saw advertised on social media over the weekend and brought $20,000 cash to a Saturday meeting with Jones, who allegedly pulled out a pistol, shot the off-duty officer in the head and fled.  The brother-in-law drew his fallen brother-in-law’s pistol and fired after the suspect but was not successful. The call went out with a coordinated effort from all NY law enforcement agencies to locate and apprehend the dangerous suspect, later identified as Jones.

The USMS NYNJRFTF adopted the case immediately, along with assistance from the NYPD, New York State Police and municipal law enforcement in the region and commenced developing leads in their search for the suspect, eventually locating him in a Rockland County motel, where he was apprehended without incident.  Charges are pending on the suspect.

“This was a multijurisdictional U.S. Marshals Service/Regional Fugitive Task Force (USMS/RFTF) operation to locate the shooter of an off-duty NYPD Officer. I want to thank everyone involved including the NYPD, New York City (NYC) Sheriff’s Office, NYC Department of Corrections (DOC), NYC Department of Investigation (DOI), NY Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS), Orange County Sheriff’s Office, Rockland County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police (NYSP), Yonkers Police Department, USMS Medical and the USMS-RFTF Albany Division,” said Ralph Sozio, U.S. Marshal for the Southern District of New York. “The dedicated investigators from the RFTF made this mission successful in locating and arresting the suspect quickly and without incident. We in law enforcement, local, state and federal, are bound together in the profession we serve.”
