Owen M. Cypher was nominated by President Donald J. Trump and confirmed by the United States Senate on July 2, 2020 to serve as the U.S. Marshal for the Eastern District of Michigan.
U.S. Marshal Owen M. Cypher began his career in law enforcement in 1995, when he enlisted into the United States Marine Corps to serve as a military police officer. While attending military police school, he was recruited and selected to serve as a guard for the Presidential Helicopter Squadron.
U.S. Marshal Cypher served as a Marine-1 Security Officer under President Bill Clinton for 4 years. U.S. Marshal Cypher achieved the rank of Corporal and received the Presidential Service Badge for his service. He also received the Marine Corps' Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Medal, and received an Honorable Discharge in 1999.
In 2003, U.S. Marshal Cypher began his career with the United States Marshals Service as a Deputy U.S. Marshal in Columbus, Ohio. In 2006, then Deputy Cypher was shot in the line of duty while executing an arrest warrant on a dangerous fugitive. For his actions during the violent encounter, Deputy Cypher was awarded the United States Marshals Service's highest honor, the Robert Forsyth Valor Award. He also received the United States Marshals Service Purple Heart Medal for the injuries sustained in action. U.S. Marshal Cypher went on to serve in several positions in multiple districts and Headquarters to include: Criminal Investigator; Senior Inspector with the Prisoner Operations Division; Protective Intelligence Investigator; FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force Officer; Asset Forfeiture Financial Investigator; and Judicial Security Inspector.
In addition, U.S. Marshal Cypher was a member of the United States Marshals Service Critical Incident Response Team, serving as a Debrief Leader. U.S. Marshal Cypher has been a member of the Critical Incident Response Team since 2011.
U.S. Marshal Cypher holds a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice from the American Military University and also attended the University of Michigan after his time in the Marine Corps.
