Deputy United States Marshal Receives Purple Heart

For immediate release

El Paso, TX – A Deputy United States Marshal (DUSM) was awarded a purple heart for injuries sustained in the line of duty during a ceremony yesterday at the Albert Armendariz, Sr. United States Courthouse.

Antonio “Tony” Perez, a DUSM assigned to the United States Marshals Service (USMS), Western District of Texas, was struck by a bullet during an attempted arrest of a fugitive wanted on multiple charges in January of last year.

On January 3, 2025, the USMS Lone Star Fugitive Task Force was tasked with locating and apprehending Jonathan Xavier Fierro, a fugitive wanted in multiple jurisdictions on multiple state/local charges to include unlawful carrying, deadly conduct, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

During the evening of January 15, 2025, DUSM Perez, along with members of the Task Force, identified Fierro and initiated mobile surveillance. As members of the task force attempted to conduct an arrest, Fierro began to shoot at members of the Task Force. DUSM Perez, while still seated in a vehicle, was struck during the altercation.

Perez was immediately rushed to a local hospital where he received emergency care. After spending time in intensive care, Perez was transported to a rehabilitation hospital in California. Perez is presently out of the hospital, living with family, and working toward a full recovery.

“Deputy Perez demonstrated extraordinary heroism in helping bring a wanted fugitive to justice,” said USMS Director Gadyaces S. Serralta. “His willingness to place himself in danger exemplified his commitment to protecting others. His actions are in keeping with the highest standards of public service,”

Fierro was arrested by the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force and was charged with one count of attempt to commit capital murder of a peace officer and seven counts of aggravated assault against a public servant with a deadly weapon.
