Matthew S. Davis was sworn in as the Acting U.S. Marshal for the Western District of Virginia on May 26, 2026, following his designation by the Attorney General of the United States.
Acting United States Marshal Davis oversees all United States Marshals Service (USMS) operations in the Western District of Virginia (W/VA), including federal judicial security, court security, fugitive investigations and apprehension, sex offender and missing child investigations, prisoner operations, asset forfeiture, and service of process.
Acting Marshal Davis began his career with the USMS in 2000. During his 25 years of service, he has been assigned to various offices and positions within the USMS and district, including Criminal Support Clerk, Deputy United States Marshal, Criminal Investigator, Supervisory Deputy United States Marshal, and Chief Deputy United States Marshal. He has been assigned and worked in the Charlottesville, Roanoke, and Abingdon Divisions of the W/VA.
Mr. Davis has been an original, founding, or integral member of multiple of the USMS’ critical specialty mission teams, to include the Operational Medical Support Unit, Unmanned Aerial Surveillance (UAS) Unit, Technical Operations liaison, and the Rapidly Advancing Manhunt (RAM) Program. He continues to serve as a Subject Matter Advisor for the RAM Program, aiding with deployments to major fugitive manhunts throughout the nation.
Mr. Davis received his Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice in 1998 from East Tennessee State University and his Master of Criminal Justice in 2005 from Boston University. He holds certifications as a UAS Pilot, a U.S. Army Counter Drug Special Reaction Team certification, an advanced graduate of the Reid School of Interview and Interrogation, and forensic cellular analysis training. He also teaches the RAM Program to personnel and partner agencies, as well as serves as a subject matter expert for responses to critical manhunts. Mr. Davis has received many awards and recognition throughout his career for his service, including the USMS Director’s Honorary Award for Individual Service to the Agency in 2013, a Meritorious Service Award in 2020, and a second Meritorious Service Award in 2024.
