U.S. Marshals Arrest Cold Case Fugitive Wanted for Aggravated Vehicular Homicide

Cleveland, OH - This afternoon, members of the U.S. Marshals led Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force (NOVFTF) arrested David Sawicki, 56. Sawicki was wanted by the Medina County Sheriff's Office for aggravated vehicular homicide.

On May 26, 2020, Sawicki was charged in the Medina County Court of Common Pleas with aggravated vehicular homicide and operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, a drug of abuse or a combination of them. The charges stemmed from an incident that occurred in Medina County in April 2020. Investigators believed Sawicki fled Ohio after the incident and had been on the run since. Information developed by the NOVFTF led them to believe Sawicki had ties to Florida and Arizona and was possibly using the alias “Anthony Horvath.”

Over the course of the investigation, task force members conducted numerous interviews and disseminated “WANTED” posters throughout the nation offering reward money to the public, which led to them vetting dozens of tips over the past 6 years. Today, members of the NOVFTF acting on a tip from the public were able to locate and arrest Sawicki at a medical facility in the 9500 block of Euclid Ave., Cleveland, Ohio where he had checked in for treatment.

Medina County Sheriff Terry Grice stated, “The family of the victim in this tragic incident is now one step closer to getting the justice they deserve. The Medina County Sheriff’s Office and the US Marshals Service will continue to work closely together to keep Medina County a safe place to live.”

U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott stated, “The arrest today was a direct result of the community and law enforcement collaborating to take another violent fugitive off the street. We couldn’t be as successful as we are at arresting fugitives without the assistance of our great citizens of northern Ohio. Today’s apprehension reflects the determination of our cold case investigators and their ability to never give up.”
