U.S. Marshals Help Capture Two Shooting Suspects

For immediate release

Kansas City, MO – United States Marshal Mark S. James announced today the capture of two recent and separate shooting suspects on the same day.

U.S. Marshals arrested Te'Avion Hawkins in Overland, Missouri on August 19, 2020. Hawkins was wanted by the St. Joseph Missouri Police Department in a shooting that occurred in St. Joseph on August 9th. Hawkins is alleged to have shot at an occupied vehicle and was charged with unlawful use of a weapon. He was also wanted for questioning in a second drive by shooting that occurred later that same day on the same vehicle. During the second attack, an adult, her small child and another adult passenger were struck. The child sustained a gunshot wound and died from the injury.

St. Joseph Police, the Buchanan County Sheriff's Office and Deputy U.S. Marshals worked diligently over the next 10 days following leads and conducting surveillance in multiple locations across two states in the search for Hawkins. On the morning of August 19th, members of the U.S. Marshals Eastern District of Missouri, St. Louis Metro Fugitive Task Force arrested Hawkins at a family member's residence in Overland, Mo. When arrested, he was found already suffering from a previous gunshot wound. He was handed over to investigators from St. Joseph and remains in custody in Buchanan County.

Later the same day, investigators from the Kansas City Missouri Police, Career Criminal Task Force located and arrested Thorne McKendrick in Hardin, Missouri. Detectives, Agents, Troopers and Deputy Marshals assigned to the unit had tracked McKendrick down to a home in Hardin the previous day with the assistance of the Ray County Sheriff, Richmond and Hardin Police Departments. McKendrick was charged on August 19th in Jackson County Court with multiple offenses including 2nd Degree Murder, Armed Criminal Action, and Unlawful Use of a Weapon. The charges stem from the shooting death of a man in the 5600 block of East 12th street in Kansas City's Northeast neighborhood on August 4, 2020.

On the afternoon of August 19th Task Force members observed McKendrick arriving at the residence in Hardin by car and took him into custody without incident shortly afterwards. He was transported back to Kansas City and lodged at the Jackson County Detention Center.
