Hiring Process

The U.S. Marshals Service uses excepted service Federal hiring procedures to fill Deputy U.S. Marshal positions.  

  • The U.S. Marshals Service will advertise positions on the USAJOBS website. The timing and locations of these opportunities will vary depending on the hiring needs of the U.S. Marshals Service. Applicants applying for opportunities that are announced on USAJOBS are encouraged to establish or update their USAJOBS profiles to obtain the most recent information specific to your job interests and ensure compliance with the 2-page resume requirements.  
  • The hiring steps after completion of the application are:
    • Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and pass the on-line assessment are scheduled for a fitness screening at one of our locations across the country.   Applicants will get one chance to pass the fitness screening, based on the minimum standards for the applicant’s age and gender. 
    • Participate in a structured interview.  Applicants who pass the fitness screening are scheduled for a structured interview at one of our locations across the country.
    • Receive a tentative offer of employment.  Applicants who pass the structured interview may receive a tentative offer of employment. 
    • Complete the pre-employment pre-requisites which include a background investigation, medical screening, and drug test.
    • Receive a final employment offer.  Applicants who pass all pre-employment requirements may receive a final employment offer. 
    • Prepare for your career with the U.S. Marshals Service!  Applicants may be selected to start at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center.  Your final employment offer will provide next steps for you.
